The cooling curve is automatically controlled by the carbon potential through an oxygen-probe.

This process, as well as gasses as nitrogen, methanol and propane, which are used in the process of carburizing, supplies ammonia to the atmosphere. The ammonia reacts with the carbon present on the surface of the steel and forms carbonitride.
